Joplin Memorial Hall history
Fire, memorials, and postwar service
The hall recovers from a damaging fire while its grounds become a broader memorial to Joplin’s war dead.
A 1945 fire damaged the auditorium floor, walls, lighting, and acoustical materials. Wartime shortages delayed full repairs for about a year.
In 1947, a World War II monument bearing 150 names was dedicated on the grounds. A second stone memorial honoring those lost in the Korean and Vietnam wars followed in 1973.
The entertainment program remained broad: Roy Acuff appeared in 1946, the Harlem Globetrotters played in 1948 and 1958, and Ronald Reagan addressed a Chamber of Commerce gathering in 1958. Veterans’ services, wreath layings, dances, exhibitions, and community events kept Memorial Hall central to civic life.
