The great renovation

A narrowly approved bond funds the hall’s only comprehensive modernization and a grand reopening with Henry Mancini.

By the mid-1970s, aging systems and mounting maintenance costs threatened the hall’s future. Voters narrowly approved a $2 million renovation bond in December 1975—only 47 votes above the required two-thirds threshold.

Work in 1976 and 1977 added central heating and air conditioning, modern lighting and sound, acoustical ceiling domes, new restrooms, an elevator, and exterior ramps. About 2,700 wooden seats were replaced with 2,000 upholstered fixed seats, with room for another 1,000 chairs on the floor.

Henry Mancini and a 40-piece orchestra headlined the grand reopening in November 1977. The capacity audience responded warmly to both the performance and the remodeled auditorium.
